The 5-second exam
A first-time mobile visitor should be able to answer, within five seconds: What do you do? Is it for me? What do I do next? Fail any of the three and the rest of your site barely matters — they never see it.
Layer 1: Positioning
- Headline about the visitor’s outcome, not your company name.
- Subhead that names who it’s for and the primary proof.
- One primary call to action, repeated — not five competing buttons.
Layer 2: Proof at the point of doubt
Every claim creates a moment of doubt; every doubt needs evidence within one viewport. Testimonials beside services, numbers beside promises, real photos beside "our team". Stock-photo proof fools no one in 2026.
Layer 3: The path
- Service pages that each carry one audience and one action.
- Forms that ask the minimum needed to respond well — every extra field is a tax on conversion.
- Click-to-call that works with one thumb, tracked as a conversion.
- Confirmation pages that set expectations ("we reply within one business day") and get measured.
Layer 4: Performance
Speed is conversion. Each additional second of load time bleeds visitors before design persuasion even begins. Target: LCP under 2.5s on a mid-range phone, images in WebP/AVIF, scripts deferred, fonts subset.
Layer 5: Measurement
Track form submits, calls, direction clicks and scroll depth. Install analytics before launch, not "later" — later never comes, and you’ll rebuild the funnel blind.
The quick audit
- Phone test: full journey on a mid-range phone over 4G. Frustrated? So is everyone.
- Count links above the fold. More than ~6 means decisions, and decisions mean exits.
- Find your best testimonial. If it lives only on a testimonials page, move it next to the first claim it supports.
- Submit your own form. How fast does a human answer? Speed-to-lead is the hidden conversion metric.
